Parchment Paper

Parchment paper, also known as baking paper or bakery paper, is a type of cellulose-based paper that is processed to gain special properties such as non-stickiness, grease resistance, moisture resistance, and heat resistance.

Key Features & Benefits:
I.Non-stick: It is commonly coated with silicon which creates a non-stick surface, preventing food from sticking to pans and dishes.
II.Heat-resistant: Parchment paper can withstand moderate to high oven temperatures, generally up to 420-450°F (216-232°C), and some specialized brands may handle even higher temperatures.
III.Greaseproof: It's effective in preventing grease and juices from bleeding through, which is especially useful when baking or roasting.
IV.Moisture-resistant: Parchment paper offers protection against moisture, making it useful for food preparation, storage.
V.Even baking: By creating a barrier between the baking surface and the food, parchment paper helps to distribute heat more evenly, reducing the risk of uneven browning or burnt spots.
VI.Easy cleanup: Using parchment paper eliminates the need for greasing pans, resulting in minimal cleanup and quick turnaround times when baking multiple batches.

Common Uses:
Lining baking sheets and cake pans: This is the most common use to prevent food from sticking and make cleanup easier.
Cooking en papillote: A method where food is cooked in a sealed pouch of parchment paper, which helps retain moisture and flavor.
Funneling ingredients: Parchment can be folded to create a funnel for easy transfer of dry or finely grated ingredients.
Layering between baked goods: Placing parchment between layers of cookies or candies prevents sticking and frosting smearing.
Covering workspaces: Taping down parchment on a counter creates a clean and easily disposable surface for messy prep work.
Piping: Parchment paper can be used to make impromptu piping bags for icing or melted chocolate.
Important Notes:
Parchment paper is not wax paper: While they look similar, wax paper is not heat-resistant and should never be used in the oven as it can melt and smoke.
Check the temperature limit: Always refer to the manufacturer's instructions for the specific temperature limits of your parchment paper, as these can vary between brands.
Safe usage: Avoid direct contact with open flames or heating elements in the oven.
Reusable (in certain cases): For dry tasks like baking cookies, parchment paper can sometimes be reused as long as it's clean and hasn't become brittle.
Compostable: Parchment paper is generally considered compostable.
